Balancing Culture & Western Education

I am looking forward to teaching 3rd Grade this year at the Fort Yukon School in Alaska.

It is in a rural area and I am excited to learn about the local culture. I am told it is the largest of 5 Athabascan villages along the Yukon & Porcupine Rivers. There are about 500 people who live there. It is not road accessible, so you have to fly from Fairbanks or take a barge from Circle...though I am told that in the Winter that sometimes people will snowmachine to Circle!

I found this youtube video which was made by some students there:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76PSSKoTI34

It talks about: Balancing Culture & Western Education. I am so excited to learn from these students and the community. I believe culture is so important and has to have a bigger role in the classroom and I look forward to documenting and sharing with all of you.

In the coming weeks, we are hoping to drive from Haines (Southeast Alaska) up to Fairbanks then Circle. We are hopefully going to get our car on the barge from Circle to Fort Yukon. We were supposed to leave this week, but the car decided to have malfunctions and we are waiting for parts. Our back-up plan would be to ferry to Juneau, fly from their to Fairbanks and then fly from Fairbanks to Fort Yukon.
